BOMB ATTACKS AVERTED AS POLICE THWARTED A PLOT BY BOKO HARAM TO ATTACK YOLA.

THE police in Adamawa State have thwarted a plot by Boko Haram to attack Yola, the state capital, ahead of the general election.

The Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Adaji, who made the disclosure at a press conference, on Friday, in Yola, said policemen discovered 19 high-calibre bombs buried in a bush a few kilometres to the city.

Adaji said the discovery of the bombs and the location, in Song Local Government Area, followed a tip-off.

He said the bombs, which were at 90 per cent completion stage, only required connections to batteries to cause what might have been conceived to be the worst explosion in the country.

“We thank God for answering our prayers in Adamawa State. The discovery has prevented something that would have caused a hell of sorrows in the state. Some of the bombs were capable of bringing down a 10-storey building,” Adaji said.

He stated that the terrorists aimed to blow strategic structures, including the about one-kilometre long River Benue bridge linking Yola South and Yola North.

The police boss explained that the bombs, the weakest of which could destroy structures within a 200-metre radius, had been detonated by the police anti-bomb squad.

The devices, he said, were on the verge of being transported to various parts of the state capital before they were discovered.

He stated that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident.

A couple of days back, six suspected suicide bombers were arrested by soldiers in Yola.

B-O-M-B-S-H-E-L-L QUIT NOW!!! SHEHU SHAGARI TELLS BUHARI TO AVOID ANOTHER DISGRACE.

SHEHU SHAGARI THROWS A BOMBSHELL AT BUHARI: QUIT NOW

FULL TEXT OF LETTER FROM ALHAJI SHEHU SHAGARI TO BUHARI.

My brother, you have contested the Presidential elections 3 times in this country and in all these times, you have never asked me or my people at Shagari village to support your bid. It is very obvious why you can’t do that. You don’t have the courage after what you did to me.
You truncated democracy with a dastardly coup and took away power from me. You humiliated me and made me to suffer, and you took away my opportunity to RULE Nigeria. You said you do not want democracy in Nigeria.. The same democracy you truncated, you are fighting hard to get with desperation and diabolical power.
You have entered into unholy alliance with some known elements of disunity in the south but let me warn you.
You will suffer hard in the hands of Tinubu and his political merchants who will use and dump you as they did to Nuhu. In 2011, you cried publicly when you lost election, and you made provocative and inciting statements that plunged this country into untoward unrest. You provoked our hot-blooded youths with war cries which erupted into post election violence, that brought Boko Haram into existence, over 500 innocent Nigerians died instantly, most of them youth corpers deployed from one of the unifying agencies of this country. Personally, I do not have a problem with your ambition.
It is your arrogance that bothers me. If you cannot summon the courage to ask me and my family to vote for you because you know we would not, why do you think Nigerians would look kindly on your past record of destroying a progressing democratic institutions painfully put in place by some respected fathers of this nations like Awolowo and Azikiwe. No my brother. It is time to wake up from your delusion and do the needful if you still have some conscience.
I am not writing this to you with vengeance intention. I am a practicing Muslim and we leave matters of vengeance to Allah. I write to you as a Nigerian, your brother and a statesman who is deeply concerned. Quit the presidential race now and save this country from the dangling sword of Damocles being menacingly wield by the crooks who surround you. This elections is not about you or President Goodluck Jonathan. It is about the unity of Nigeria which can only be assured by being fair. By this I mean, being fair to the people of Niger Delta.
We can only do this by either re-electing Goodluck or substitute him with any of his kinsmen from the South-south as that can only count fair for a people who are entitled to 8 years in the office of the President. For the elders council in the north, we have come to the conclusion to work towards realizing that fairness. 4 years more is not eternity. It is not too much of a concession for us to make to move Nigeria forward as one indivisible and united country under one God.
May Allah open your mind to see reason.
God bless Nigeria.
Alhaji Shehu Shagari (GCFR).

PHOTO NEWS THE REASON WHY AFRICA IS GOING BACKWARD.

African is going backwards because most of our selfish leaders refused to hand over power to young vibrant upcoming politicians without knowing that as the clock thick so the world is upgrading they are busy sleeping due to old age and so is the African future sleeping and we are moving backward take for instance Nigerian politician and a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army who ruled Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup against democratic government. The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government. He also ran unsuccessfully for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, for the 2015 elections still struggling to rule since 1961.

EQUATORIAL GUINEA – President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (68) – 31 YEARS 6 MONTHS

Obiang toppled his uncle Macias in a palace coup in Aug. 1979. A new constitution was adopted to usher in multi-party politics, nominally at least, in 1991. Human Rights Watch in Jan. 2011 reported flaws in the latest presidential polls in 2009, in which Obiang won 95.4 percent of the ballot. The authorities thwarted a coup bid in 2004 by a former British special forces officer, Simon Mann.

J. E. Dos Santos
ANGOLA – President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos (68) – 31 YEARS 5 MONTHS

Dos Santos assumed the presidency of the mineral-rich country in Sept. 1979, four years into a civil war with UNITA rebels that ended in 2002. The MPLA’s landslide 2008 victory left rivals in tatters, letting dos Santos change the constitution and boost his powers. A new charter has enabled the veteran ruler, who is widely expected to win 2012 elections, to remain in power until 2022 although there is speculation he will retire before then.

R. Mugabe
ZIMBABWE – President Robert Mugabe (86) – 30 YEARS 9 MONTHS

Mugabe became Zimbabwe’s prime minister in April 1980 after independence elections. The former Marxist guerrilla became president in 1987 and has held fast to power. Mugabe, 87 on Feb. 24, and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change were forced into a coalition government two years ago after a disputed poll in 2008 which led to mass violence, a flood of refugees into South Africa and a deeper economic crisis in the resource-rich state.

Paul Biya
CAMEROON – President Paul Biya (78) – 28 YEARS 3 MONTHS

Biya took over in Nov. 1982 from President Ahmadou Ahidjo and won re-election for another seven-year term in October 2004. The central African oil producer is due to schedule a new poll later this year and Biya is expected to seek another term.

D. S. Nguesso
CONGO REPUBLIC – President Denis Sassou Nguesso (67) – 26 YEARS 11 MONTHS

Sassou Nguesso has been in power all bar five of the last 32 years. He seized power in a Feb. 1979 coup but then lost the country’s first multi-party elections in 1992 to scientist Pascal Lissouba. He regained the presidency in 1997 after a civil war and was re-elected in 2004 for a further seven-year term.

Y. Museveni
UGANDA – President Yoweri Museveni (67**) – 25 YEARS

Museveni declared himself president in Jan. 1986 when he seized Kampala after a five-year guerrilla struggle. Museveni banned multi-party politics shortly afterwards but re-introduced it in 1996. Museveni is expected to win a fourth term in 2011 despite a strong challenge from third-time opponent Kizza Besigye.

K. Mswati III
SWAZILAND – King Mswati III (42) – 24 YEARS 9 MONTHS

King Mswati is sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch and was crowned in April 1987. Political parties have been banned in landlocked Swaziland since 1973. The king introduced a new constitution in 2006, but the ban on political parties remained. Mswati is frequently criticised by human rights groups as a dictator who runs the country as his own personal fiefdom.

B. Campaore
BURKINA FASO – Blaise Campaore (60) – 23 YEARS 4 MONTHS

Blaise Campaore became head of state after deposing his predecessor, Thomas Sankara, in a coup in Oct. 1987. Campaore has widespread popular support and won a landslide victory in presidential polls in Nov. 2005, taking 80 percent of the vote. A new law from 2005 prohibited presidents from standing for more than two terms but the Constitutional Court ruled the law could not be applied retroactively, clearing the way for Compaore’s re-election in Nov. 2010 when he again won with 80 percent of the vote.

O. H. al-Bashir
SUDAN – Omar Hassan al-Bashir (67) – 21 YEARS 7 MONTHS

In June 1989, Bashir overthrew the democratically elected civilian government of former Prime Minister Sadeq al-Mahdi and he appointed himself civilian president in 1993. He won his last elections in 2010. In March 2009, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Bashir — the first for a sitting head of state — for masterminding a campaign of genocide in Darfur, where the United Nations said that 300,000 people have been killed in the long-running conflict. Bashir put the death toll at 10,000 people. Bashir has refused to recognise the ICC and continued to travel, despite the arrest warrants. His defiance gained him support in Sudan, especially in the Muslim north where many are suspicious of the West. Last month, around 99 percent of southerners voted to separate from the north of Sudan in a referendum held under a 2005 peace deal which ended decades of north-south civil war.

Do African youths really have future more especially in politics???.

BOMBSHELL NORTHERN LEADERS RESPONSIBLE FOR BOKO HARAM INSURGENTS-OBANIKORO.

The former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has said northern leaders should be blamed for the emergence of the Boko Haram in the country.

He said this at the inauguration of a civic centre built by a member of the House of Representatives, Abiodun Akinlade, at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He said the northern leaders over the years failed to invest in the future of the youth though qualitative education.

Obanikoro said, “We have Boko Haram today because the leaders of that section of the country did not invest in their education.

“President Goodluck Jonathan is already addressing this by constructing 123 almajiri schools in four years.”

He said there was relative peace in the South-West because the late sage and the former Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, invested in the education of his people.

While he commended Akinlade for donating an Information and Communication Technology centre to the polytechnic in the past, Obanikoro noted that it was only knowledge that could liberate the people in any society.

Akinlade, on his own part, said he was committed to the development of his constituency, stressing that the civic centre cost N80m.

“The project started four years ago and cost N80m. Nothing is too much to give in uplifting my people, having earlier built and equipped an ICT centre in the institution, and other locations in my constituency,” he added.

The Rector, Olusegun Aluko, thanked Akinlade for the gesture, saying the management would ensure that the facility would be put to judicious use.

CHADIAN TROOPS KILLED NO FEWER THAN 200 BOKO HARAM MEMBERS.

General Ahmat Dari, commander of the Chadian contingent

• Nine soldiers lose their lives

Chad's army has said it has killed more than 200 militant Islamists and lost nine men during a battle to recapture Gamborou-Ngala in Borno State.
Boko Haram militants killed about 30 people after fleeing from the battle to Cameroun, a resident said.

It was the most intense battle known to involve Chadian troops since they entered the conflict in Nigeria.

Fighting in the town lasted about an hour, General Ahmat Dari, commander of the Chadian contingent, said in remarks broadcast on state radio in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena. The militants are “in disarray,” he said.

The Chadian troops seized 10 vehicles and about 100 motorcycles after the clashes, Brigadier-General Adam Abdoulaye said in separate comments broadcast on the radio.

Nigeria, Chad and Cameroun are also bombing the vast Sambisa forest, where the militants have bases.

Boko Haram fighters were suspected to have taken to the forest where they kept more than 200 schoolgirls they abducted in April from Chibok.
It is not clear whether any of the girls are still there. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has since said that the girls have been married off.

Chad sent troops to Cameroun last month to join the offensive against Boko Haram, following widespread criticism of the Nigerian army's failure to curb the insurgency.

About 2,500 Chadian troops backed by armoured vehicles crossed into Nigeria on Tuesday as part of the 7,500 regional force approved by the African Union (AU) to battle Boko Haram for the control of Gamborou-Ngala, a small town on the border with Cameroun.

Chad’s army said it had recaptured the town, although the sound of automatic gunfire was still heard yesterday in Gamboru, AFP news agency reported.

Retreating Boko Haram fighters have raided Fotokol, a town on the Camerounian side of the border, a resident said.

She told the BBC Hausa service that she had seen about 30 bodies, all with gunshot wounds, in a mosque in the town.

The six-year insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and displaced some 1.5 million people.

IGBOS FLEEING NORTHERN NIGERIA FOR FEAR POST ELECTION VIOLENCE.

With fear over post-election violence hundreds of Eastern Nigerian’s are returning home to the South East, particular women and children.

The move to leave the North comes in spite of pleas by Igbo Leaders and Ohanaeze Ndiigbo for those in the North to remain steadfast and vote where they live.

Some of the returnees have said they would stay until after the elections before returning to the North, adding that they abandoned their businesses for fear of crisis.

Mr. John Odinachi, a returnee to Owerri Imo from Kano, said: “The country may disintegrate after the elections”.

“The northerners are known for killing innocent people at the slightest provocation. I advise the Igbo in the North to return to the East and go back to their base after the elections.”

This has resulted in high increases in rents, in the returnee’s home states.

For instance, rent for a two-bedroom apartment that used to cost between N100, 000 and N200, 000 for a year now goes for between N250, 000 and N300, 000.

Returnees who could not afford rents were going to sub-urban areas, where rent has also scaled up by about 27 per cent.

NIGERIA MAY POSTPONE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IF………

REUTERS – Nigeria may delay its Feb. 14 presidential election if the electoral commission cannot distribute enough voter I.D. cards by Feb. 8, an electoral commissioner told Reuters on Wednesday.

The hotly contested poll will pit President Goodluck Jonathan of the ruling People’s Democratic Party against former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.

“Let’s see how the PVC (permanent voter card) distribution goes by Feb. 8, then maybe,” Amina Zachary, a commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said on the sidelines of a news conference when asked whether or not the date could be changed.

She made it clear that no decision had been taken. INEC extended its deadline for voters to collect their cards to Feb. 8, but only 44 million out of 68.8 million have been distributed so far, with just 10 days to go before the poll.

Foreign powers are closely observing how elections will be held in Africa’s biggest economy and have voiced concerns over violence in the aftermath, as was the case after the 2011 election, when 800 people died.

A delay would stoke already rising tensions ahead of the vote, but failure to get enough cards out would also compromise the poll.

National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki caused outrage when he called for a postponement in London last month, citing concerns over the slow distribution of voter cards.

The opposition and civil society groups say a delay would bring the credibility of the election into question and they say People’s Democratic Party wants a postponement because it fears losing. But they are also concerned about the slow collection of cards by voters.

The main issue is the uneven distribution across the states as the total is already higher than the number that voted in 2011, Zachary said.

Out of Nigeria’s 36 states and its federal capital territory, Abuja, 11 have distributed less than 60 percent of the cards while 4 of those are below 50 percent.

Lagos, the most populous state and opposition stronghold, has distributed fewer than 40 percent of its voter cards.

“We’ve sometimes just had one person at some distribution stations … now we put two but the cost is very high … it has eaten up all the money as we have to pay INEC staff extra for staying late,” Zachary said, lamenting a lack of volunteers.

GUNMEN KIDNAPPED AGIP OIL WORKERS IN NIGER DELTA REGION.

Yenagoa: Gunmen riding in a speedboat kidnapped four Nigerian oil workers in the crude-producing Niger Delta, the military said Wednesday, as fears rise of growing unrest in the region 10 days before national polls.

The hostages are employees of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NOAC), a subsidiary of the Italian major ENI, said area military spokesman Isa Ado.

There were taken on Tuesday in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa state while they were travelling by boat without a security escort, Ado said.

"We have started a rescue mission to secure their release and also bring the captors to book," he told reporters.

Kidnappings, including attacks targeting foreigners, are common in the region`s creeks and swamps, although hostages have typically been released following a ransom payment.

Unrest in the Niger Delta declined dramatically following a 2009 amnesty deal with militants who had caused massive disruptions to crude output in Africa`s top producer.

The amnesty pact included huge cash payouts to fighters, with 230 billion naira ($1.2 billion, one billion euros) having been paid to some 30,000 rebels, according to the programme`s spokesman Daniel Alabrah.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Niger Delta native who is facing a tough re-election battle in the February 14 vote, is popular among many in the region.

But some militants have threatened renewed violence if Jonathan is defeated by opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari, who hails from the Muslim-majority north.

While there was no indication that the latest kidnapping was linked to the vote, analysts are watching the region closely for signs of agitation, a focus that will be intensified if Jonathan loses to Buhari.

Neither candidate has clearly indicated his plans for the amnesty programme but Alabrah previously told AFP it may be extended because of persistent militant activity around the delta.

NO FEWER THAN EIGHT PEOPLE FEARED DEAD AS A.P.C AND P.D.P SUPPORTERS CLASS IN KADUNA.

Eight supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State were feared dead, following the outbreak of violent clash with supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna.

Supporters of PDP had been alleged to be defacing posters of the presidential candidate of APC, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari and that of its governorship candidate, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.

It was gathered that while some supporters of APC accused the other party of the vandalism, it was hell let loose, as supporters of PDP allegedly swooped on their APC counterparts, with eight said to have feared dead.

In a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune and signed  by the spokesperson of el-Rufai campaign organisation, Samuel Aruwan, in Kaduna, the APC confirmed the death of eight of their members, with many others said to have sustained injuries.

The statement said the party suspended its campaign tour of Zone 2, which is Kaduna Central, because of the incident.

But, in a swift reaction, Governor Yero said it was APC supporters who attacked his campaign team at Bakin Ruwa area of Igabi Local Government Area.

A statement by the media aide of the governor, Mallam Ahmed Maiyaki, alleged that the thugs were hired by the opposition party to attack the governor’s convoy with the sole aim of throwing the state into confusion.

“It is unfortunate that the same APC that is chanting change has resorted to violence and threats,” the statement declared.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Zubairu Abubakar, said the police were on top of the situation.

FEAR OF NIGERIA BREAKUP IS LOOMING EVERYWHERE.

Foreign investors sold off Nigerian stocks valued at N846.5 billion ($4.5 billion) last year, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) data showed on Monday.

This was 65 per cent more than in 2013 as decline in oil prices and the naira currency depressed sentiment.

Reuters reported that with an Islamist insurgency raging in the country’s north and political risk added to the mix in the rum-up to national elections later this month, the exodus has extended into 2015.

Nigeria’s main share index, which was up 1.1 per cent on Monday, has fallen 14.7 per cent so far this year. It shed 16 per cent in 2014.
Top decliners this year include Dangote Cement, which accounts for a third of market capitalisation, down 22 per cent, and Transcorp down 13 per cent.

Foreign investors increased the pace of stock market outflows from September, selling out of the relatively liquid banking, consumer and oil sectors as the price of Brent crude, the benchmark against which Nigeria’s oil is priced, slumped. The Nigeria is Africa’s biggest economy and chief oil exporter.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has regularly intervened to try to prop up the naira.

Meanwhile, the naira firmed 1. 5 percent yesterday as it was lifted by central bank intervention and dollar sales from multinational oil company Shell, dealers said.

The currency, which opened at N188.70 to the dollar, firmed to N185.60, following the dollar sale. The central bank asked commercial lenders to bid for $500,000, in a move to support the naira while Shell sold an undisclosed amount of dollars, dealers said.

BREAKING NEWS-TRANSASIA FLIGHT CARRYING 58 PEOPLE CRASHES INTO RIVER.

Plane carrying 58 people hits bridge, crashes into river
TransAsia flight was en route from Taipei to the island of Kinmen
(CNN)Twelve people are confirmed dead and rescuers were working Wednesday to pull survivors from the submerged wreck of a TransAsia flight in Taiwan.

The flight, which was carrying 53 passengers and five crew, crashed shortly after takeoff from Taipei Songshan Airport, en route to the island of Kinmen.

A Taipei City government spokesperson said the ATR 72 twin engine turboprop aircraft hit the Nanhu Bridge before crashing into the Keelung River, just before 11 a.m. local time (10 p.m. ET).

Taiwan's official news agency CNA reported that the pilot appeared to try to control the plane as it descended, but the aircraft's wings grazed an overpass and hit a taxi.

The taxi's occupants were injured but in a stable condition after being taken to hospital.

Dozens of passengers were still missing, CNA reported, as video from the scene showed rescuers in lifeboats trying to pull survivors from the water and the wreckage.

According to the report, 31 passengers aboard the flight were Chinese tourists from Xiamen. Two children were on board.

The CAA said the plane was less than a year old and had last completed a safety check on January 26. The agency did not offer any information on what may have caused the crash.

Last year, an older TransAir ATR 72, which was attempting to land in the Taiwanese Penghu Islands crashed, resulting in 49 deaths.

GOV ROCHAS OKOROCHA OPENS GAY CLUB IN OWERRI IMO STATE CAPITAL.

The last may not have been heard about the Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha’s involvement in homosexualism, as investigation by our reporter has revealed that the governor has opened a goy night club in the city of Owerri.

According to a reliable source, the club house located beside IBC premises, Akanchawa/Concorde Avenue, Owerri is owned by Governor Okorocha using the owner of Disney Hotels, Victor Nwanaforo as a front.

It was gathered that the club commenced operation and only allows men with their cards since late last year.

This hangout is a white bungalow that hardly gives itself away. It looks like the regular club inside with heavy interior decorations.

It normally starts at 8pm with some big boys in town. But, on a continued wait if you wait long enough, you will notice young and middle aged men strolling into the premises to the dance hall. And that is where the real action is.
It was learnt that men and young boys are selected before entering the dance floor. The mode of selection is based on membership cards.

FINALLY NIGERIA TROOPS STORM SAMBISTA FOREST BOKO HARAM HIDEOUT.

As part of measures to contain and quell the Boko Haram insurgency, the military has stormed the insurgents in Sambisa Forest, their notorious hideout, according to reports from the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The director of defence information, Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade, told the agency that the military had been raiding the forest and other hideouts of the sect since Tuesday night.

According to the agency, the army used it war drones to level some of the Boko Haram camps in the northeast but it was not clear about the casualties on both sides.

The army said that they are still committed to securing the civilian population at whatever cost.

“We are still committed in ensuring that we degrade their ability to continue their activities and eventually eliminate them,” Olukolade said.

“The mission is on. There are no allowing terrorists anywhere. As many times as they come, it will only give us the opportunity to decimate them.”

On Saturday, Chadian forces reclaimed the northeastern Nigerian town of Gamboru-Ngala after a heated battle with Boko Haram that involved a ground and air campaign. Gamboru-Ngala, about 145 kilometres east of Maiduguri, was captured by Boko Haram last year.

A soldier involved in the operation said Chadian forces were working under the African Union agreement to help Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram.

Information made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday indicate that troops of the Nigerian Army under directive to invade Sambisa forest in Borno State with a view to end the years of Boko Haram insurgency, have started bombarding the fringes of the forest near Adamawa state.

Sources close to the area have confirmed that aerial bombardment had commenced yesterday.
A soldier serving with the 7 Division, Nigeria Army, Maiduguri confirmed this development to Leadership even as he begged not to be quoted in this report.

According to him, “special forces have been mobilised from different part of the country, especially the 81 battalion, to Yola over the weekend and the operation starts today (Monday).

“What people may have heard or seen today may not be unconnected with the operation. They have to do the bombardment of the forest starting from the fringes before the artillery troops would begin to advance.

But be rest assured that before the end of this week the forest as well as many communities under the control of Boko Haram would be reclaimed”.

The soldier said himself and most of his colleagues were happy with the resolution of the United Nations for agreeing to constitute an international joint task force to deal with the Boko Haram.

GOODLUCK ESCAPE BOMB ATTACK TODAY IN GOMBE

Goodluck Jonathan left re-election rally in stadium in northeastern city of Gombe just three minutes before deadly blast

Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian president, narrowly avoided a deadly bomb at a re-election campaign rally in the city of Gombe on Monday.

A bomb exploded in a car park 200 yards outside a stadium just three minutes after Nigeria's president left, witnesses said, wounding 18.

There was no claim of responsibility for Sunday's attacks but the city has been hit by suspected Boko Haram militants in the past and suspicion was likely to fall on the Islamist group.

Initial reports suggested the blast came from a car bomb, but rescue workers and health officials later said two female suicide bombers were suspected of being behind the attack.

"We have evacuated two bodies of females we believe were suicide bombers behind the blast," said a rescue worker, a comment backed by a medical source at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.

Mohammed Bolari, who was at the rally in the northeastern city, said the explosion happened at 3.10pm (2.10pm GMT), just three minutes after Mr Jonathan's departure.

A local reporter who asked not to be named said: "The president had just passed the parking lot and we were trailing behind his convoy when the explosion happened... just 100 metres from the bus we were driving in."

Mr Jonathan had been speaking to supporters of his ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as part of his bid for re-election at polls in two weeks' time.

His appearance in the city came just a day after two blasts in the city, including one that targeted a military checkpoint. At least five people were killed.

Bolari said of the latest blast: "It is difficult to say how many people were affected because of the confused struggle by the huge crowd leaving the venue to escape for fear of another blast."

The local reporter said that the explosion led to unrest in the city, with crowds of angry youths attacking anyone seen with any PDP signs.

"They were shouting and denouncing the president's visit which they blamed for the attack," he added.

"We had a difficult time passing through these crowds. At one point a crowd threw stones at our vehicle. Some reporters sustained cuts from smashed window screens."

E-X-P-O-S-E-D NIGERIA RICHEST OIL BLOCKS OWNERS

The oil block business is so lucrative that Danjuma’s Sapetro divested of its investment in Akpo condensate for $1billion dollars. The business is second to none in Nigeria. That is why any attempt to investigate the activities in this sector will always be futile. The money is so much that they give bribes in millions of dollars. A birthday gift or child naming gift from an oil block owner to a government official could be as paltry as $2million dollars, and if the official’s father died, the condolence gift could reach mere $3 million dollars.
When they want to bribe legislators, it is in millions of dollars and any ongoing investigation ends within weeks. They are so confident that with excess money they can buy up Nigeria and they are succeeding OML 110 with high yield OBE oil fields was given Cavendish Petroleum owned by Alhaji Mai Daribe, the Borno Patriarch in 1996 by Sanni Abacha. OBE oil field has estimated over 500 million barrels of oil. In layman’s language and using average benchmark of $100 dollars per barrel, translates to $50 billion dollars worth of oil reserve. When you remove the taxes, royalties and sundry duties worth about 60% of the reserve payable over time you get about $20billion dollars worth of oil in the hands of a family.
OPL 246 was awarded to SAPETRO, a company owned by General Theophilus Danjuma, by Sanni Abacha in 1998. Akpo condensate exports about 300,000 barrels of crude daily.
NOML 112 and OML 117 were awarded to AMNI International Petroleum Development Company owned by Colonel Sanni Bello in 1999. Sanni Bello is an inlaw to Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Head of State of Nigeria.
OML 115, OLDWOK Field and EBOK field was awarded to Alhaji Mohammed Indimi from Niger State. Indimi is an inlaw to former Military President Ibrahim Babangida.
OML 215 is operated by Nor East Petroleum Limited owned by Alhaji Saleh Mohammed Gambo.
OML 108 is operated by Express Petroleum Company Limited is owned by Alhaji Aminu Dantata.
OML II3 allocated to Yinka Folawiyo Pet Ltd is owned by Alhaji W.I. folawiyo
ASUOKPU/ UMUTU marginal oil fields is operated by Seplat Petroleum. Seplat is owned by Prince Nasiru Ado Bayero, cousin to the Central Bank Governor Lamido Sanusi. This oil field has the capacity of 300,000 barrels of oil daily. This translates to $30million dollars daily at average benchmark of $100 dollars per barrel. Deducting all sundry taxes, royalties etc , this field can yield $12billion dollars daily for the owners .
Intel owned by Atiku, Yarádua and Ado Bayero has substantial stakes in Nigeria’s oil exploration industry both in Nigeria and Principe and Sao Tome.
AMNI owns two oil blocks OML 112 and OML 117 which it runs Afren plc and Vitol has substantial stakes in oil blocks. Afren plc is operating EBOK oil fields in OML 67. Vitol lifts 300,000 barrels of Nigerian oil daily. Rilwanu Lukman, former OPEC Chairman has stakes in all these named three companies.
OPL 245 was awarded to Malabu Oil& Gas Company by Sanni Abacha. Dan Etete, Abacha’s oil minister owns Malabu Oil. In 2000, Vice President Atiku Abubakar convinced Obasanjo to revoke OPL 245 given to Malabu Oil. Etete had earlier rejected Atiku’s demand for substantial stakes in the high yield OPL 245 and it attracted the venom of Ota Majesty who revoked the licence. However, in 2006, Obasanjo had mercy on Dan Etete and gave him back his oil block worth over $20 billion dollars.
OPL 289 and OPL 233 was awarded during Obasanjo era to Peter Odili fronts, Cleanwater Consortium, consisting of Clenwater Refinery and RivGas Petroleum and Gas Company. Odili’s brother in law, Okey Ezenwa manages the consortium as Vice Chairman.
OPL 286 is managed by Focus Energy in partnership with BG Group, a British oil concern. Andy Uba has stakes in Focus Energy and his modus operandi is such that you can never see his name in any listings yet he controls OPL and OML through proxies
OPL 291 was awarded to Starcrest Energy Nigeria Limited, owned by Emeka Offor by Obasanjo . Immediately after the award, Starcrest sold the oil block to Addax Petroleum Development Company Limited (ADDAX) Addax paid Sir Emeka Offor a farming fee of $35million dollars and still paid the signature bonus to the government. Emeka Offor still retains stake in ADDAX operations in Nigeria.
Mike Adenuga’s Conoil is the oldest indigenous oil exploration industry in Nigeria. Conoil has six oil blocks and exports above 200,000 barrels of crude daily.
The oil block national cake sharing fiesta could take twists according to the mood of the Commander-in –Chief at the particular time. In 2006, Obasanjo revoked OPL 246 which Abacha gave to Danjuma because he refused to support the tenure elongation bid of the Ota Majesty. In 2000, Obasanjo had earlier revoked OPL 241 given to Dan Etete under the advice Atiku.
However, when the Obasanjo-Atiku face off started, the Ota Majesty made a u-turn and handed back the oil block to Etete.
During the time of Late President Yarádua , a panel headed by Olusegun Ogunjana was set up to investigate the level of transparency in the award of oil blocks. The panel recommended that 25 oil blocks awarded by the Obasanjo be revoked because the manner they were obtained failed to meet the best practices in the industry. Sadiq Mahmood, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum endorsed the report to then president with all its recommendations . As a result of the report Yarádua revoked eleven oil blocks.
In April 2011 Mike Adenuga attempted to buy Shell’s OML 30 for $1.2 billion dollars. The Minister for Petroleum and Nigeria’s most powerful woman refused the sale of the OML30 to Adenuga citing national interest. This block was later sold to Heritage Oil for $800 million dollars eleven months later.
In the name of competitive bidding, which Obasanjo introduced in 2005, Officials bring companies overnight and through processes best described as secretive and voodooist they award blocks to party faithful, fronts and phoney companies. They collect gratifications running into hundreds of millions of dollars which is paid into an offshore account and the nation loses billions of dollars of revenue to private pockets.

BOKO HARAM STOPS INAUGURATION OF NEW TRAIN SERVICE IN MAIDUGURI.

The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Idris Umar, has lamented that the restoration of train services to Maiduguri is being hampered by the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in the area.

Umar reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to the restoration of full services along the Gombe-Maiduguri corridor as soon as the security situation in the area substantially improves.

Speaking on SUnday in Gombe during the commencement of the Gombe-Kafanchan-Port’Harcourt and Gombe-Kafanchan-Kaduna intercity train services, Umar called on citizens of the country to utilise the revived train services being provided by government for their economic benefits.

The minister, who stated this at the Gombe railway station, said the series of such inaugurations in the last few weeks followed the massive rehabilitation of the rail transport system embarked upon by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“As a result of the restoration of the services in the last couple of weeks, a lot of interest and hopes are being rekindled and confidence in the President’s transformation agenda is being heightened,” he said.

The occasion was also used to inaugurate five-number 68 seater air-conditioned coaches.

Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo commended the Federal Government for restoring the railway system, saying it had the capacity of creating 7,000 jobs as well as boost economic activities in Gombe alone.

“The train services will also cut not less than 50 per cent cost of transportation of goods and services from the Gombe corridor to other parts of the country,” he stated.

GOOD NEWS FOR WHATSAPP USERS DON'T MISS OUT.

It looks like mobile messaging service WhatsApp has started rolling out the much awaited voice
calling feature.

Reddit user Pradnesh Patil (pradnesh07) posted screenshots and even a video of WhatsApp’s new interface that features voice calling.

Patil was able to use the feature on his Nexus 5 running Android Lollipop. The screenshots suggest that there would be separate screens for dialing a voice call to WhatsApp contacts, call logs and ongoing calls. The screenshots are similar to leaked pictures of the interface that appeared online in December.

As per Patil, the calling feature is included in WhatsApp’s new build (2.11.508) which is only available on WhatsApp’s website at the time of filing this story. So users will need to download the .apk file and side-load the app until it arrives on the Play Store.

However, even after installing the new version, voice calling will not be activated for all users. Users will only be able to get the voice calling feature if someone who has it enabled calls them through WhatsApp similar to an invite system, as per Patil.

He added that the person who sent him the invite has confirmed that it works on all Android phones (and not just Android 5.0 phones) and in other countries (not just India). WhatsApp has not announced the rollout of the feature yet. Perhaps, it’s still testing the feature with select users.

WAR THREAT - OHANAEZE,MASSOB,O.P.C BACKS NIGER DELTA MILLITANTS.

Ex-Niger Delta militants have been issuing war threats if President Jonathan loses his re-election bid.

Last week, the ex-militants, in a meeting with Governor Siriake Dickson of Bayelsa threatened to throw the country into chaos if Jonathan loses the elections.

Despite widespread condemnation of the war threats by the ex-militants, socio political groups in the South-East and South-West have backed the stand of the militants.

The groups, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, MASSOB and OPC made their stand known to Punch in separate interviews.

The Ohanaeze Ndi’gbo group, argued that what the militants meant was that if the election is not fair and credible and Jonathan loses, they will reject the result. This, the Igbo group said, “is a right position to take.”

The National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Mr. Osita Oganah, quoted the All Progressives Congress, APC as also saying that if the election was rigged and its candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) lost, the party would form a parallel government.

“There’s nothing wrong in that too.”

However, Oganah said, “We, the Igbo, are in support of what the militants have said to the extent that they’re putting Independent National Electoral Commission under pressure.

“Their comments should move the INEC to do its best so that every would-be voter gets his or her Permanent Voter Card. Nobody must be disenfranchised.

“These militants are Nigerians–they belong to this country and want the best for this country. What the militants have said is not out of place. I don’t see any reason why the Temporary Voter Card cannot be used. If the electorate is unable to get PVCs, it’s INEC’s fault and not theirs; making that statement is to ensure that if the election is conducted well, Jonathan will win.”

In a similar way, the Oodu’a Peoples Congress, OPC, said the recent attacks on President Jonathan’s campaign train in the northern part of the country triggered the militants to rise in the President’s defence.

The National Coordinator, OPC, Mr. Gani Adams, said, “They are entitled to their opinion. There are different ways of approaching the election. They spoke based on the attacks on Jonathan in Katsina and Bauchi. When some politicians wanted to frustrate (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo in 2002, we (OPC) rose up to confront them.”

Another socio-political group in the South East, the Progressive Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, a breakaway faction of MASSOB, also defended the stand of the militants.

The Director of Information, Progressive MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, said while the group was not political, it shared the general political interest of Igbo people. He said, “What they said was true. If Jonathan loses the election, there would be a greater height of militancy in the Niger Delta region; if Buhari loses, insurgency will increase. It is on both sides.”

Meanwhile, the Afenifere Renewal Group has ccondemned the ex-militants for issuing war threats, stating that they are not the electorates.

The National Publicity Secretary, ARG, Mr. Kunle Famoriyo, said the country practises democracy and there should not be dictatorship. He added that the electorate should not be coerced into voting for anybody.

The group’s spokesperson, Mr. Yinka Odunmakin, said, “The drumbeats of war from the Niger Delta and the North are unacceptable. We, the Afenifere, condemn the call for war by the Niger Delta militants.

Also, the former Minister of Defence and ex-Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), called for the arrest of the militants, describing their threats as “unguarded and reckless.” He warned that “miscreants” must not be allowed to hold the
country by the jugular.

TWO KILLED AS FACTIONAL GROUPS CLASHED OVER A GIRL FRIEND IN BENUE STATE.

TWO persons lost their lives on Sunday, as factional groups clashed over a girlfriend at Adekaa, in Gboko area of Benue State.
A source gathered that the factional group fought over a lady identified as Aisha, in which two people, including the lady, died.

It was gathered that one Tersoo and the lady in the centre of controversy lost their lives in the process.

Police spokesman, John Bako, who confirmed the report, said details of the incident was still sketchy, but gave the name of the deceased as Tersoo and Aisha.

The police spokesman said the bone of contention, which further denigrated to fisticuff, started as a struggle between two men from either of the groups, which laid claim to the late Aisha.

Bako added that weapons were freely used during the fight which led to the death of Tersoo, one of the supposed boyfriend and Aisha.

It was gathered that the incident happened at 6.00 a.m. on Sunday in the home of Tersoo, near Bristow college at Adekaa in Gboko.

But witnesses said they suspected that the late Tersoo was murdered following his involvement with a youth group in fishing out the killers of the deceased pharmacist, Cletus Labe, at his business premises in Gboko, penultimate Wednesday.

NO FEWER THAN 2000 APGA MEMBERS DEFECT TO PDP IN ANAMBRA.

2,000 APGA Members Defect to PDP in Anambra

No fewer than 2,000 members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Onne, Akpu, Ogboji and Agbudu communities of Orumba South local government Area of Anambra state have defected to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

The APGA supporters from these communities defected on Saturday at a rally organised by the duo of the PDP candidate for Anambra South Senatorial district in the February 14, Presidential and National Assembly election, Senator Andy Uba and the Orumba North/South Federal Constituency candidate, Hon. Ben Nwankwo at Agbudu square in the area.

Leading the decamped, the President-General of Onne community who is also an APGA faithful who spoke on their behalf, Mr. Uchenna Madike said they decided to join the PDP because their membership of APGA in the last 12 years had neither been eventful nor yielded anything positive to their communities.

The members he said were from the four communities in Orumba South which are contiguous and least developed, adding that the APGA administration in the state has done nothing to bring development to them or ameliorate their sufferings.

SCORES KILLED AS SARS AND CIVILIAN JTF BATTLE BOKO HARAM ON SUNDAY IN MAIDUGURI.

SCORES of people were, on Sunday, killed in Maiduguri, when a combined efforts of army, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police and volunteer youths, popularly known as Civilian JTF successfully repelled an attempt by the Boko Haram terrorists to invade Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the Boko Haram terrorists, who came through Molai village, outskirts of the city, forced a lot of residents of the area to flee.

It will be recalled that the incident which started at about 7.00 a.m. on Sunday, occurred barely one week after the last Sunday’s attack on Maiduguri and only two weeks to the February 14th general election.

A resident of the area, Mallam Garba Molai, said they were told by the soldier in the area to flee the area, as all the soldiers took position and engaged the terrorists in a fierce battle.

He said people were killed, including civilians with more casualties on the side of the insurgents, as the combined efforts of the military, civilian JTF and SARS, assisted by aerial bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force, successfully repelled them.

He said “Many insurgents were killed, including some civilian casualties, while two artilleries, vehicles, motorcycles and other armories were recovered.

“Many people had fled the area, except a few of us assisting the security operatives.”

A member of civilian JTF, Ibrahim Idi, who also took part in the operation, told the Nigerian Tribune on phone that “as I am talking to you, we just came back from Dalia village in pursuit of the fleeing terrorists. We killed a lot of them, while two artilleries, vehicles, motorcycles and many arms and ammunition were also recovered.”

He said “one of the insurgents who hid on the fence of Molai General Hospital was aiming soldiers, our members and civilians, but thank God, one resident of the area took him by surprise, came behind the fence and brought him down with his stick and our boys quickly went there and killed him.”

Another member of civilian JTF, Garba Mansur, who took part in the operation, said they received a call from their overall chairman that the insurgents were successfully repelled along Molai village along Maiduguri-Damboa road, outskirts of the city and that they were moving towards Dala Abuja Zannari area and that they quickly mobilised their members and moved to the area.

He said: “It was a hectic operation, as the military engaged them in a gun battle, assisted by our members, but when the insurgents started shooting Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG), the soldier asked us to start crawling; before we knew it, four of our members were killed.”

Speaking on the incident, Thomas Andrew, an elder in one of the churches in Maiduguri told the Nigerian Tribune that: “It was a pathetic situation for us, the common people, that our leaders have failed us. For me, I think this is the time our president, our representatives at the National Assembly and all well-meaning Nigerians to agree and come to terms with the reality of happenings in Borno State.

“Even if it means declaring a total state of emergency and allow the military to do their job properly, this is the time before it is too late.”

Elder Andrew, who could not attend church service as many other worshippers, told the Nigerian Tribune that he was not in the position to advise the authorities, particularly the president, but to him and considering what he had seen in the state, there was more to it than meet the eye, as the war against terrorism in Borno State was not yet uhuru if politics or its activities was not suspended for a while.

Residents of Molai quarters living along the battle lines, Nigerian Tribune learnt had since vacated their houses, as soldiers made way for them to flee, so as to avoid heavy casualty. The battle which is still ongoing as of the time of filing this report had residents crying to God for intervention.

It was gathered that sounds of gunshots had were heard all over the city with
military artillery and jet fighters going round the city; though nobody knew the extent or how the battle formation was drawn, but there was hope that the security forces would succeed in repelling the insurgents.

Meanwhile, a Boko Haram suspect, who was arrested along Bakasi, close to the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) office in Maiduguri, dressed like a woman and wearing black gown had confessed to have sneaked into town to cause mischief.

Sources within the security operatives who spoke with Nigerian Tribune, said the suspect, Abubakar Kachallah, also revealed that about 20 of them had, on Saturday night, sneaked into town for different mission.

“When he was brought to us, he said they have attempted to attack Konduga 12 times, but did not succeed, as according to him, after several meetings among the leadership, it was agreed that whoever takes over Maiduguri or Konduga will become leader of the sect.

“He refused to say whether Shekau was still alive or not, but said he was ready to die, as he seemed to have no fear to tell us that they were simply obeying the commands of Allah, who also assured them of victory in this holy war.”

In a related development, a 70-year-old man, his grand daughter, one other girl and his ram were killed by a stray RPG in Zannari, Abuja Sheraton of Maisandari ward of Maiduguri metropolis.

A resident of the area said the stray RPG hit the old man sitting under a shade in front of his house with his animal when it struck the tree they were sitting under, killing him, his three-year-old grand daughter, her friend and one of his animals.

ABUJA — Following the promise by the Police High Command to ensure a hitch-free elections and checkmate all manner of violence, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, commissioned 263 patrol vehicles for the Nigerian police even as he appealed to supporters of political parties to eschew violence at the polls.

Police helicopters…
Represented by the Vice President Namadi Sambo, Jonathan said approval for the acquisition of 2,564 operational vehicles was given with the intention to see that the Police “provide the needed security and enhance their operation to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections.”
Jonathan’s words: “The procurement of these vehicles is aimed at boosting the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to deliver effectively, efficiently and appreciably.
“A well-equipped and adequately motivated police force will assist in no small measure to assist in ensuring the security needed in the drive to economic growth and development of Nigeria.
“In view of the strong commitment of government to provide for the NPF within available resources, it is my hope that the gesture by government will be reciprocated by assisting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in ensuring it conducts free elections this month.
“It is also expected that the deployment of these operational vehicles will translate to enhanced surveillance of our communities in order to improve security.”
Highlighting the efforts of government towards enhanced peace and security of all over the country, the Vice President urged all Nigerians to see themselves as Nigerians and see to the unity of the country, despite their political leanings.
He said: “I want to call on politicians, the aspirants, their supporters and their sympathisers to eschew all forms of violence and unlawful practices, both in words and conduct, before and after elections.
“Let us eschew any form of violence. We should condemn any form of violence before, during and after elections. We should know that elections will come and go but Nigeria will remain as one nation and one people.”

Asked if the remaining bulk will be available before the elections that are two weeks away, IGP Abba said: “Delivery particular when it is on production, you can’t make conclusions, but the most important thing is that the contract has been signed and the supply is coming from an indigenous company.

JAILED AL JAZEERA STAFF PETER GRESTE RELEASED AND DEPORTED FROM EGYPT.

The Al Jazeera journalist Peter Greste, who was detained in Egypt for 400 days, has been released by Egytian authorities.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Sunday that Greste had arrived in Cyprus and was "desperate" to return to his native Australia.
Bishop said that Greste had been released "unconditionally".
Greste was accompanied by his brother and was reported to be in good health.
Two other Al Jazeera journalists - Baher Mohamed, a producer, and the channel's Cairo bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy - still remain imprisoned in Egypt.
Greste's release followed a growing chorus of worldwide condemnation over the detention of the three journalists.
Al Jazeera Media Network welcomed the move but demanded the release of Greste's colleagues.

Al Anstey, Al Jazeera English's Managing Director, speaks about Greste's release
'Good news, but not enough'
In a statement, the network said the campaign to free its journalists in Egypt would not end until all three had been released.
It said that all three have to be exonerated, and the convictions against its other journalists tried in absentia also have to be lifted.
Mostefa Souag, acting Director General of the Al Jazeera Media Network, said: "We're pleased for Peter and his family that they are to be reunited. It has been an incredible and unjustifiable ordeal for them, and they have coped with incredible dignity.
"Peter's integrity is not just intact, but has been further enhanced by the fortitude and sacrifice he has shown for his profession of informing the public.
"We will not rest until Baher and Mohamed also regain their freedom. The Egyptian authorities have it in their power to finish this properly today, and that is exactly what they must do."
Al Anstey, the Managing Director of Al Jazeera English, said he was relieved Greste had been freed and was on his way home to be reunited with his family, but spoke of the need to free Baher and Mohamed.
"We've got to focus that Baher and Mohamed are still behind bars, and several of their colleagues that were sentenced to ten years in absentia are still sentenced today," he said.
Greste, Baher and Mohamed had been falsely accused of colluding with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
After their conviction in June last year, the men were sentenced to between seven and ten years in jail.
On January 1 this year, Egypt's Court of Cassation overturned the sentences and ordered a retrial, but there is still no indication of when that trial will begin.

A COMMUNITY IN ANAMBRA STATE IN TURMOIL OVER FETISH PRACTICE.

A community in Anambra State in the Southeastern part of Nigeria is enveloped by fear over strange discovery akin to witchcraft power used to hypnotise people.Okechukwu Obeta writes that many sons and daughters of the area and beyond had been under the spell of misfortune until the scourge was unravelled recently

Tension and fear have engulfed Azia community in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.

The natives and other residents now live in grave fear. The situation was thrown up following a chilling discovery in one of the villages, Ukwakwa. It all happened during a Christian crusade organised by the Umuezeleke kindred to purify the community of every evil tendencies so as to reposition the area, natives and all residents on the path of progress in the new year.

The crusade tagged: “Purification and Liberation”, was the initiative of Umuezeleke kindred resident in Lagos. Ahead of the one week programme, held last week, most natives of the community clan living outside the town returned home to participate in the programme.

A popular fiery catholic priest in the area, Revd. Fr. Jude unigwe was invited to officiate in the crusade. He is in charge of St. Andrew’s Catholic Parish, Azia. So, virtually all Christian faithful in the area: men, women, young and the aged all converged on the Eke Igwe Market Square, venue of the crusade.

Mid-way into the one-week crusade which started Sunday, January 11,2015, the priest apparently moved by the Spirit decided that they would go round the community to purify homes. As they moved round the village, they were shocked to their marrow on arrival at the home of one of their late native, Mr. Innocent Obodoefuna. In front of the compound was a sign-board boldly written on it: “Apostolic Deliverance Ministry (The Miracle Centre, a.k.a Bethlehem). The name of the head pastor is Prophet S. N. Nkume. It is believed to be a Christian worship centre. But the crusaders were later to discover to their utter amazement that the man was actually into fetish practices.

The chairman of Umuezeleke association, Lagos branch, Mr. Innocent Okeke, narrated the sordid scene and practices going on at the so-called Apostolic Deliverance Ministry. “When we were going from house to house for purification and blessing of homes, we arrived at the compound at about 6pm and saw three people seated in the compound. They are two big men and lady. They came in two exotic vehicles: a Land Cruiser jeep and one other car that look like a Toyota Camry. We asked them about the prophet. When the prophet came out, we told him that we were going for house to house purification and blessing of homes. The man is not a native of our village. He is from Ubaha, a neighbouring village. Initially, he did not want us to come inside, but, when we resisted him, the landlady and her children who are part of what we were doing allowed us to go in. When we went in, we discovered that the man has shrines in all the four rooms he is occupying.

He continued: “What we found most disturbing was that the man had some names of people, some of them are names of people in our town, some others are naives of some towns close to our town, and some names of people we do not know. These names were written in a paper and hung somewhere in one of the shrines. We also saw a piece of paper containing list of items, including leg of human being, chameleon, goat, cow, lizard, bat, and other animals. The man said that it is the list of things he wants to give to one of his clients who wants him to do some work for him. We also, saw a red candle moulded in human image. Some are male and some are female images. All of them have several pins pierced into them. We discovered that those people whose names are in the paper hung in the shrine are people whom their enemies brought to the man to either kill for them or to retard their progress. We were told that when somebody brings the name of his enemy, the man will ask the person what he wanted him to do to the person. Depending on the request of such client the man, after making incarnations with the person’s name, will pierce pin into any of the human-image red candle and after sometime, the person will fall sick and die. Some will start suffering retardation in one way or the other”.

Following the discovery, the youths wanted to descend on the man but were restrained by the leaders of the town. The youths were said to have gone wild following the discovery of the name of a native of the area, one Israel Okafor who suddenly started vomiting blood and died. The prophet was later said to have fled the town.

One Ngozi Mbadugha in her late 30s from the neighbouring Mbosi town was also alleged to be a victim of the fake prophet’s voodoo practice. Her name was also seen in the prophet’s shrine and was contacted. Her story is, indeed, a disturbing account. She disclosed that she mysteriously abandoned her Law programme in 2003 after completing her 400 level in the Faculty of Law, Ekiti State University. She said that she was forced to terminate her studies following the strict policy by the then vice-chancellor of the institution who, accordig to her, insisted that any student owing school fees would not be allowed to registered for final year courses. She said she was then owing school fees from 200 level because her elder brother who was training her suddenly took ill and later died. Also, even though she had many suitors, who proposed marriage to her, none of those marriage proposals clicked until sometime in 2007, but, even at that, the marriage later crashed barely after eight days. “Mine has been a long harrowing experience. I have been in a situation that has defied any treatment or laboratory tests. Nothing good had ever comes my way”, an apparently traumatized Ngozi told LEADERSHIP Sunday.

According to Mr. Bonaventure Ucheagwu, another native of Umuezeleke, “We strongly believe that it is these type of fetish practices that are retarding the progress in our town; that is why we decided to organise this crusade to sanitise the whole town. We have banished the fake prophet from our community. We are not beating him; all we have told the police is that we don’t want him anymore in our town because he is polluting the town”.

Though the President- general of Azia community and the traditional ruler, Mr. Kenneth Maduako and Igwe P. M.C. Ojiuro respectively were not available in the community when LEADERSHIP Sunday visited the town, officers at the Ihiala divisional police station confirmed the incident.

Efforts to speak to alleged prophet Nkume was however unsuccessful as police said he was under protective custody.
